Our History

Gary Thomas, the CEO and founder, founded RE/MAX South County in 1985. Armed with an uncanny sense of the business and a keen understanding of the market, he quickly transformed the brokerage into one of the top franchises in the nation.

Since the opening of the original office in Mission Viejo in 1985, Gary has opened offices located in the prestigious coastal, South and East Orange County locations of Aliso Viejo, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Mission Viejo, Monarch Beach, Monarch Bay Plaza, Newport Beach, Newport Bayside and Villa Park.

These offices presently have over 350 experienced, high producing sales associates.  In 2007, RE/MAX Real Estate Services was ranked 73rd in the United States in dollar volume among all real estate companies by Real Trends, a noted industry publication.

Gary Thomas, the man behind the vision and success of RE/MAX Real Estate Services, is a second generation REALTOR® - following in his parents’ footsteps. He started his own real estate career in 1976 with Associated REALTORS® in Mission Viejo as a Broker Associate. Since that time he has continued to hone his experience and sharpen his vision to make RE/MAX Real Estate Services one of the most progressive and leading edge companies in the nation. As a result, Gary Thomas is considered to be one of the industry’s notable leaders.  In addition, after many years serving both the California Association of REALTORS® and National Association of REALTOR® in a range of positions such as Director and Treasurer, Gary was elected 2001 President of the California Association of REALTORS®, the largest real estate trade association in the country.  Gary has served as chair and liaison to numerous NAR committees and in 2009 will be the Vice President of Government Affairs.
